Centennial knocked off River Hill, 51-45, in a Howard
County boys’ basketball in Clarksville
Wednesday afternoon.

Tandario Bogues contributed 10 for the Eagles (6-10 overall,
4-8 league), who swept the regular season series from last season’s state Class
3A champions. Phil Ashtianie led River Hill (9-5, 7-5) with 16 points.

The Hawks travel to Glenelg for a league contest Friday
evening while Centennial welcomes Long Reach.

Atholton travels to Howard Friday evening for at least a share of first. Wilde Lake hosts Marriotts Ridge Friday.

Long Reach 67, Oakland Mills 57
Deon Queen scored 20 points, and Mario Lloyde chipped in 18 as Long Reach won its second consecutive home decision. Seniors Steven Bell and Obi Ukwuoma had 12 and 10 points respectively for the Lightning (12-2, 10-2), who remained a game behind Howard, Marriotts Ridge and Atholton for first.

Gionni Williams led all scorers with 21 points for Oakland Mills (4-9, 4-8), and Darryl Lee added 12. The Scorpions will play at Reservoir Friday evening while Long Reach is at Centennial.

Junior Binak MacGyver scored 15 points, and senior guard Kameron Crump added 11, leading No. 20 Howard past visiting Glenelg. Jonathon Moore added 10 points for the Lions, who maintained a share of first with Marriotts Ridge and Atholton.

Bruce Richardson led all scorers with 21 points for Glenelg (7-9, 6-6), and Steve Visnic chipped in 10. The Gladiators host River Hill Friday evening while Howard hosts Atholton for a share of first place.

Marriotts Ridge 58, Mt. Hebron 37
Leading by only five points at halftime, Marriotts Ridge dominated the second half and cruised to a decision over Mount Hebron Wednesday evening.

Senior guard Kevin Seker scored 19 points, and Kyle Williams added 12 for the Mustangs (13-2, 11-1), who remained in a first-place tie with Howard and Atholton, who both won league matches Wednesday.

Jameson Zacharias had eight points to lead winless Mount Hebron (0-16, 0-12). The Vikings will host Hammond in league play Friday evening while Marriotts Ridge travels to Wilde Lake.

Reservoir 79, Hammond 73
Senior center Bill Reybold scored 31 points, and junior Matt Witmer contributed 13 as Reservoir (4-12, 4-8) defeated Hammond. James Brooks finished with 12 points for the Fulton school.

Junior guard Chris Baker led all scorers with 34 points for Hammond (2-11, 2-10), and junior forward Leo Rogers had 14.  The Bears will look to snap a six-game losing skid, traveling to Mount Hebron Friday evening while Reservoir hosts Oakland Mills.

All season, Oakland Mills High’s girls’ basketball team has been carried by the scoring prowess of Miriam McKenzie. Wednesday against River Hill, the Loyola University-bound senior was held to season-low nine points.

But it didn’t spell doom for the Scorpions. The Columbia school rallied for a 40-39 victory over the Hawks in a Howard County league match in Clarksville.

Senior guard Gabi Barnes led Oakland Mills (8-3 overall, 8-2 league) with 14 points. Alex Vega led all scorers with 16 points for River Hill (11-3, 7-3), and Ryan Dannelly contributed 15.

Monet Nias’ rebound and score with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining in regulation was the difference for the Scorpions, and got a loose ball after a miss under the basket by Dannelly with 4.1 seconds left. Oakland Mills coach Seth Willingham saw his team overcome a 11-point deficit in the second half.   

“They [River Hill] did a great job taking away Miriam,” said Willingham. “We had some people step up and make some big shots.”

Barnes spearheaded the Scorpions on both ends as they scored the final eight points of regulation. She missed the front end of an one-and-one with 4.1 seconds remaining, but the Hawks weren’t able to get off a final shot.

“As a team, we need to figure out ways to work without her,” said Barnes, who will attend High Point University in North Carolina next school year. “We needed to come together, and know that we can play just as good as anybody on the court.”

McKenzie, who’s averaging more than 25 points a game, didn’t score in the final eight minutes of regulation. Her only basket in the second half came at the end of the third quarter, bringing the Scorpions within 33-29.

They trailed 39-32 after a basket by Dannelly, but Oakland Mills flustered the Hawks with half-court defensive pressure. The Scorpions got to within 39-37 as Barnes converted two free throws with 2:59 remaining in the game after a steal and was fouled going to the basket.

It was 39-38 after a free throw by Nicole Hill, who came up with another steal leading to Nias’ rebound and basket. The teams each exchanged turnovers over the next minute and a half before River Hill had possession with 14.1 seconds remaining.  

“We just didn’t have leadership on the court,” said River Hill coach Teresa Waters, who didn’t have leading scorer Alicia Seelaus because of a foot injury. “Everybody began to unravel, looking for somebody to step up and that step-up person wasn’t there. We were able to contain Miriam, but you got to play for 32 minutes.”

The Hawks had a 29-18 advantage early in the third quarter, but Oakland Mills scored seven straight capped by a three-pointer from Barnes to get back into contention. She scored 10 points in the second half, seven in the third period.

“She hit some big shots for us, and she always provides a spark on defense,” said Willingham. “It was only a matter of time before somebody found a way to shut Miriam down, but we found a way to win.”

TOP 20: GIRLS BASKETBALL     January 15, 2008

1)  Seton Keough (15-1) (2 … up 1)
Had to beat SF to earn No. 1 – and did. The Gators grabbed the top spot
with a 22-point TKO win over St. Frances as Asya Bussie scored 15
and B.J. Williams 13. They added a 24-point win over St. Paul’s as Arika Ullman scored 26. Keough
faces challenges from Spalding and Mercy this week.

2)  Arundel (6-4) (3 … up 1)
The Wildcats trounced Chesapeake
by 61 and beat Southern-AA by 12 as Sheronne Vails scored 23. They face two key
Anne Arundel games this week: on Tuesday at Old Mill, which beat them last year,
and at South River on Friday.

3)  St. Frances (13-3) (1
… down 2)
The Panthers hit a rough stretch,
losing to Seton Keough by 22 and Riverdale Baptist by 21. They also beat St.
Mary’s, but by just 15, and handled Dulaney by 18. They are a different team
without Kandice Green, who remains hobbled with an ankle injury.  SFA
is on exam break until Jan 23rd.

City (10-1) (5 …
up 1)
The Black Knights beat Dunbar, handled Catonsville
by 10 and then had a “quality loss” to Riverdale Baptist (5-0 versus Top 20
teams), 62-38.

5)  Mount Hebron (13-0) (6 … up 1)
The Vikings beat Glenelg by 22 and Atholton by 20, proving that they are
the undisputed top team in Howard. They have won by an average of 28 ppg this
season. They are on exam break until Jan 23rd.

6) Mercy
(14-2) (13 …up 7)
The Magic had a 3-0 week, beating two ranked teams ahead of them in the
process, earning a big jump up in the poll. Mercy beat Spalding by seven as
Khadija Mitchell scored 20 and then McDonogh by three, as Carissa Shropshire
led a rally with 10 points in 4th quarter, including a pair of big 3’s. They
capped off the week with a 30-point win over NDP. Mercy faces a big road game
on Sunday at No. 1 Keough.

7)  Western (9-2) (4 … down 3)
The Doves beat Poly by 14 to start the week. Then in the Mayor’s Academy, they
beat Dulaney 37-17, (2-2 after one quarter!) and then lost to No. 17 Catonsville,
61-51, dropping them down three spots.

8)  Winters Mill (12-0) (7 … down 1)
The Falcons dropped one spot despite winning and staying unbeaten, (due to
strength of schedule and Mercy’s wins over ranked teams). They beat Urbana by 12 and they
topped Century by 14 in a key match-up of undefeated Carroll teams, 52-38. Cassie
Cooke (18) and Jordan Neville (14) combined for 32 points.

(9-6) (9 … same)
The Eagles had easy wins over Roland Park and IND,
but lost by three, 41-38, to Mercy after leading for most of the game but
fading in the fourth quarter. Moriah Young scored 19 points in the loss.

10)  Archbishop Spalding (13-4) (10 … same)
The Cavaliers began the week with a seven-point loss to Mercy, and then finished
the week with a seven-point win over Towson Catholic on Saturday, as Janay
Brinkley scored 24.

11)  Atholton
(9-3) (8 … down 3)
The Raiders beat Oakland Mills by six as Elie Snyder scored 31, and then
lost to Mount Hebron by 20 in a match-up of undefeated Howard teams. Atholton
was within 10 in the final period but could get no closer. Snyder scored 14 in
the loss.

12)  South River (9-2) (14 … up 2)
The Seahawks beat Glen Burnie by four and then Severna Park by nine, in Anne
Arundel league play. Ashley Wagner scored 18 in the last win. South

13)  Catonsville (8-2) (17 … up 4)
After a league win over Hereford, the Comets
faced two ranked Baltimore
City teams in the Mayor’s
Academy. They lost to City by 10, 61-51, and then beat Western by the same
score, as freshman Zoey Whittingham scored 19 points. A close loss to No. 5 and
a win over No. 4 earns them a bump up in the rankings.

14)  Oakland Mills (6-3) (12 … down 2)
The Scorpions lost to Atholton by six and then beat Wilde Lake
by 28. Miriam McKenzie was on a scoring binge with 30 and 32 in the two
outings.

15)  Towson Catholic (8-5) (19 … up 4)
Despite a loss, the Owls climb four spots – go figure. They beat a tough St. Paul’s team by eight
as Gabrielle Styles scored 19, and then fell to Spalding, but by only seven
points, as Tyler Hale scored 20. Strength of schedule, a close loss to No. 10, and
losses from a number of other ranked teams helps TC move up.

16)  Severn (12-3) (unranked)
The Admirals jump into the rankings, all the way to No. 16, with a big 48-44
win over previous No. 15 Old Mill, as Leah Cranmer scored 18. They also beat
Pallotti twice, by 32 and 25. Taylor Wieczorek had a huge double-double of
20/20 in one of those.  Severn
has only lost three games: one was to No. 12 South River by two points and another
was to then-No. 17 River Hill by three points – Severn
belongs in the Top 20.

17) Fallston
(12-1) (unranked)
The Cougars jump back into the Top 20. They won a key battle of undefeated
Harford teams, topping last week’s No. 20 C. Milton Wright by 10 points, 51-41.
Jess Harlee scored 20 points and added 10 assists. The only blemish on Fallston’s
record is an earlier loss to New Town.

18)  Dulaney (6-2) (13 … down 5)
The Lions beat Loch Raven in league play, and then dropped two at the Mayor’s
Academy. Kudos for taking on ranked teams, but Dulaney showed that it needs
more production from the backcourt to compete with Top 10 teams. They lost
37-17 loss to Western (2-2 after one and down 24-5 at half) and then lost to
St. Frances,
51-23.

19)  Old Mill (8-2) (15 … down 4)
The Patriots beat Severna Park as Ciarra Lucas scored 18, and also beat Glen
Burnie in Anne Arundel play, but lost to Severn by four. They face a big test

20)  New Town (8-2) (unranked)
New Town jumped back into the rankings. It had two wins over Owings Mills
and one over Overlea. Brittany Spencer was a consistent point-producer with 21,
21 and 25 points in those three wins. The two previous losses were to Digital Harbor
and Frederick.

 Atholton’s Howard County and regional runner-up Mike Massarelli (215) had a 54-second pin against Reservoir and a 3-2 decision over Oakland Mills’ Michael Daniels, and county and regional runner-up Malcolm Stennett (189) won by a first-period fall and a disqualification to pace the Raiders to a 10-0 mark after Tuesday night’s county league tri-meet.

Atholton scored a 44-29 victory over Reservoir (11-3), and a 36-24 win over Oakland Mills.

Atholton’s county and regional runner-up Bruce Steinel (135) had two pins, Kyle Werner (145) earned a pin and a technical fall, Adam D’Amico (130) had a pin and a decision, and Kevin Beck (112) earned a decision and a major decision;

Andrew Parlett (103) took a forfeit for the Raiders against Oakland Mills, which defeated Reservoir, 37-24.

In the night’s marqee bout, Oakland Mills’ Mike Santiago (285) edged Atholton’s Brian Nance, 2-1, to win a clash of unbeaten wrestlers in what Raiders’ coach, Bruce Lindblad called, “a heckuva match.”

Santiago is a defending 285-pound county and regional champion, and Nance was last year’s county and regional champion at 189 pounds.

The Scorpions’ Jovan Saunders (152) improved his record to 16-2, defeating the Raiders’ county runner-up, Doug Carpenter, 2-1, and, also defeating Reservoir’s Zach Coe, who, last weekend, earned Outstand Wrestler honors at the Bengals’ Brawl Tournament at Blake High School in Montgomery County.
