Oakland Mills’ quarterback Justin Sottilare, who stands 6-foot-3, rushed for eight touchdowns and threw for 2,700 yards and 15 more scores, has signed a national letter of intent accepting a scholarship to attend St. Francis Xavier University Antigonish in Nova Scotia, Canada, his coach, Seth Willingham, has announced.

Sottilare, who completed 59% of his passes and threw or rushed for 12 two point conversions, set a single-game state passing yardage record of 448 yards on the way to earning DigitalSports First-Team All-Howard County honors and ranked third in the state this past season in total passing yardage.

“Justin has only scratched the surface with his football abilities. As he continues to mature, physically, he is going to become a great college quarterback,” said Willingham, a former quarterback at county rival Wilde Lake High.

“His ability to grasp different offenses and pick up on reading defenses will give him an advantage as an incoming freshman,” Willingham said. “Running a complex high school offense puts him ahead of the game.”

In a Howard County League loss to Marriotts Ridge, Sottilare set the state’s single-game passing yardage record. Sottilare followed that up by leading the Scorpions to victories over league rivals Hammond and Mount Hebron, with the win over Hammond ending a 24-game losing streak.

In the game against Marriotts Ridge, Sottilare threw for the record of 448 yards to go with four scoring passes in a
50-26 loss.

In
that game, Sottilare threw touchdowns scores of 25 and 91 yards to
freshman Adam Reed (183 yards); another of 16 yards to senior Rick
Kersey (108 yards); and still another of 20 yards to senior Bryson
Cramer.

A fourth player, senior Lyle Williams, totaled 111
receiving yards against the Mustangs, with Sottilare completing 23 of
37 passes.

Sottilare passed for 1,367 yards and six passing scores as a junior.
